As a catalyzing partner, Wrigley is driving Team Earth's mission to inspire action for preserving the health of our planet – recognizing that many people making small changes can create a real and lasting impact.
Through their support of the Prince's Rainforests Project, Wrigley has already played an important role in Team Earth's first initiative: to raise awareness about the threats of deforestation.
Now, they are DOING MORE to address the critical issue of climate change.
Wrigley's Commitment to Team Earth Wrigley is committed to educating our Wrigley associates about the importance of making smart choices and weaving sustainability into everyday actions, and we are committed to demonstrating those practices in our business. We will invite all Wrigley associates to be a part of Team Earth, helping to amplifying the difference that we can make by joining forces with others around the world.
"Wrigley is proud to be the initial and catalyzing partner for the launch of Team Earth. We are pleased to work with Conservation International to create awareness of global and local conservation problems around the world, and provide practical solutions that can be woven into every day life – helping us all become active members of Team Earth."
- Dushan Petrovich, President, Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company Foundation
Wrigley's Commitment to Sustainability At Wrigley, we know our continued success depends heavily on the prosperity and sustainability of the global marketplace that we serve. Our founder, William Wrigley Jr., first established the importance of mutually beneficial relationships back in 1891 – when he stressed that shared success with customers, suppliers, employees and the communities where we live and work – was vital to building a business that would last for generations.
This same commitment to creating a business and a legacy that will last for generations is behind Wrigley's focus on sustainability and our commitment to sound environmental, social and economic practices.
In fact, sustainability at Wrigley means driving business performance while advancing the well being of people, and the planet, now and for future generations.
Today, more than ever, sustainability is one of our leading priorities, and we have committed our people, our resources, and our innovative energy to improving our environmental profile and advancing the well-being of our associates and our neighbors around the world.
IN DEPTH: Learn more about Wrigley's commitment to sustainability.
Wrigley's Sustainability Initiatives We have always cared deeply about our people, our business and the world in which we live and work. To Wrigley, sustainability isn't a new "program," sustainability is simply the continuation of our values-driven culture and the "Wrigley Way" of doing business – which has served us well for more than 100 years.
Today we're more proactive than ever and we are committed to continuous improvement and advancing our efforts as stewards of the environment.
Wrigley recognizes the footprint our business has on the environment and we are taking action in four areas where we believe we can make the biggest impact, including our product innovation and sourcing, operations, packaging, and our communities.
We are committed to selecting sustainable ingredients and suppliers and designing eco-friendly products that minimize environmental impact.
In addition, Wrigley has reduced energy use by eight percent and water consumption by 17 percent over the last two years (between 2006 and 2008). Last year, we reduced packaging materials globally by 1,800 tons, which included a 50 percent reduction in the plastic of our bottle packaging.
Finally, our commitment to our communities comes to life through our philanthropy and volunteerism. Since its founding in 1987, the Wrigley Foundation has distributed more than $44 million to non-profit organizations that support youth development, the environment, and our communities.
Wrigley associates also have a passion for service and exhibit their generous spirit through volunteer efforts in local communities. Whether it is helping to build a country getaway camp for inner-city youth, cleaning up a local park, or mentoring a young person, Wrigley associates make a difference with their commitment of time and experience.
While we are proud of the progress we've made, we recognize there is more to do. Within each of our focus areas, we have identified next steps to ensure we continually raise the bar. By 2012, we're committed to further reducing our energy, water and waste consumption by 12 percent across all manufacturing operations. We're also working with key environmental partners such as Conservation International to advance conservation and responsibility.
By making sustainable business practices second nature, we will make certain that the legacy we leave behind will ensure a vibrant, safe and healthy planet for tomorrow.
