 Harrah's

One of Team Earth's founding partners, Harrah's is an important collaborator in our efforts to educate and engage the public about the critical global environmental challenges that Team Earth will address.

Harrah's began its environmentally-focused efforts from the ground up – guided by the vision and commitment of the company's 85,000 team members. Starting with local efforts that have led to nationwide changes, CodeGreen programs have been built on partnerships – first among employees, then reaching out to include guests, local communities, suppliers and others who shared the same commitment.

Now, the 85,000 team members of Harrah's are excited to join an even larger team committed to making a difference for the planet: Team Earth. From individual participation to global action, Harrah's has pledged to make a difference.

Harrah's Commitment to Sustainability "At Harrah's Entertainment, our commitment to the environment is not just an expression; it's in our very code. Our Code of Commitment highlights the four principals we stand for; Our Commitment to our Team, Our Commitment to our Guests, our Commitment to our Communities and our Commitment to the Environment. These core tenets drive the very heart of our business, and doing what is right by each of these guides us every day."

What's Harrah's Up To? As the world's largest provider of casino entertainment, Harrah's Entertainment is aggressively and creatively addressing its environmental challenges and responsibilities. Harrah's approach to environmental stewardship is simple: make immediate changes, fully engage its team members and integrate long-term environmentally friendly solutions.

The company has incorporated environmental sustainability programs into all of its properties and activities, making a fundamental commitment to the environment an integrated component of everyday business operations. CodeGreen, Harrah's comprehensive environmental program, focuses on four critical issues: energy, waste, water and carbon emissions.

CodeGreen's pursuit of sustainability would not be possible without the enthusiasm of Harrah's employees and the support and engagement of its customers. Teams at each Harrah's property work hard to reduce natural resource use, conserve energy and promote reuse and recycling.

Harrah's has already completed over 100 conservation initiatives, from replacing lighting fixtures with energy efficient bulbs to installing lower-flow water controls in guest areas. Over the last six years, Harrah's has invested over $60 million in energy conservation measures alone, reducing carbon dioxide by 234 million pounds annually and avoiding the equivalent emissions of 12 million passenger car miles per year.

In 2008, Harrah's became the first casino company to both join Climate Leaders, EPA's partnership with leading firms committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and win a regional EPA Environmental Quality Award. In 2008, Harrah's also partnered with NativeEnergy to reduce the World Series of Poker's carbon footprint.

A Bright Idea in Atlantic City

The bright lights of the world's most famous casinos attract millions of visitors every year. Now at Harrah's, these lights will shine even longer – and use less energy.

Across all of its New Jersey properties (including casino spaces, offices and parking garages), Harrah’s has upgraded from using incandescent light bulbs to CFLs and other more energy-efficient bulbs.

In just one example, Atlantic City's Bally's Tower replaced the 6,500 incandescent bulbs that power its ongoing light show with more efficient bulbs. This initiative has reduced energy consumption by 22.2 million kWh (38 million lbs of CO2).
